I’ve come to realize that every activity I have experienced while being in New Zealand has been extremely satisfying. I often compare the activities I do to a tourist activity I would do back in the states. I found that everything I’ve done in the Bay of Plenty has been a more intimate, real experience than you are likely to find in the states (where it seems more commercialised). Granted, it is winter and considered to be off-season, but in my opinion, what better time to get out and enjoy these activities without the waiting period or a bunch of people around? Even though the temperatures are lower, there are so many clear gorgeous days that make up for the cold.
Horseback riding was added to my list this past weekend. A co-worker and I pulled up to Briars Horsetrek, where we were joined by two Briars regulars and two guides. We met our horses, had a review of how to ride and then were on our way.
I’ve mentioned before how much I am in love with the landscape of New Zealand, and on this day I was lucky enough to be riding through its green hills. We strolled through the farmland, while those with more experience (everyone but me) would stay back every once in awhile to canter for an adrenaline rush. I guess my horse wanted in on the fun so he would take me for a canter when he felt the time was right. Let’s just say we weren’t the best of friends. We eventually made our way down towards the ocean and spent about 20 minutes walking on the beach before returning.
These activities I’ve been fortunate enough to do have led me to different areas in the Bay, where each company seems to incorporate a little bit of history into the entire experience. It was a quiet, peaceful ride, but since this was my first time in Maketu, I would have liked to have learned more about the area.
We headed back to where we began an hour and a half later in the afternoon.
On our way home, we stopped in Maketu Seaside Café for some ice cream, and were ordered to eat outside because it was considered a takeaway. I was very confused and looked to see if we would be taking up room for other customers. When I saw that the café was entirely empty, my confusion and frustration grew. I know that this wouldn’t happen in the states. I wonder if this style of service is normal in New Zealand?
